Earlier this year Places Gym held a ‘Shape up for summer’ competition, for anyone to enter and be in with the chance of winning 12-weeks personal training. Open to members and non-members alike, one winner at each gym was chosen.
Now half-way through, one member in Telford
has made a significant change to her entire lifestyle since winning the competition. Before starting the 12-week programme, Lesley weighed just over 28st and found her lifestyle choices were not only making her feel lethargic, but her whole body ached.
Like Lesley, many of us have been trapped in a cycle of eating junk food for comfort, although we know in the back of our minds, we are only going to feel worse afterwards. Lesley says: “I wouldn’t use full-length mirrors, as I wasn’t fond of the way I looked; I was ashamed of how big I had become.”
Since beginning the programme 6-weeks ago, Lesley has lost over two stone and feels so much happier, seeing and feeling the difference within her body. Working with personal trainer Mitch
, at Places Gym Telford, the 12-week programme has been designed for Lesley based on her fitness goals, health and well-being goals and most importantly, designed to adapt to her changing physical abilities.
“My confidence has increased, and my body shape is changing. Overall, I am less tired, and after a full day’s work, my body no longer aches. I will never go back to being like I was before. I enjoy the buzz you get from working out and knowing that I have pushed myself. Consequently, I am happier. Yes, I still have a long way to go, but I know I can do it!” continued Lesley.
Understanding Lesley had been having a difficult time looking into full-length mirrors and feeling happy within herself, Mitch made Lesley’s first goal ‘Acceptance’. Being happy to look at herself working out, in a mirror, and not be ashamed. Mitch says: “Although many people think going to the gym and having a couple of workouts a week will make a difference, if you aren’t in the right mindset, you will make little progress.
"Start by accepting yourself and then working to improve. This is the message I shared with Lesley, and now I am so proud of how far she has come, and I know she is too. We still have 6-weeks to go and I can’t wait to see how far she will push herself now she is past the half-way point.”
Knowing how much of a challenge she had against her, Lesley did admit that at times she has had a negative attitude or has just wanted to stop. But taking a step back to process how far she has already come and fall back onto the encouragement Mitch has given during those moments, Lesley has carried on pushing.
“It has been tricky sometimes to keep going, but Mitch has been so helpful and pushed me when I needed it the most. Finding the right foods was really tricky, but he even helped me adjust my diet to find what foods work for me and listened to me when I was struggling.
“Recently, I have felt more content with the food I am eating and do enjoy it. I’ve no longer got the desire to eat junk food as I know the repercussions if I sway away from healthier choices.
“Before starting this journey, I would always put myself down, but now I am proud of what I have achieved and know that I can do anything I put my mind to."
